Your team
We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic candidates on the autism spectrum to join the ECB as a trainee in one of the following areas:
- Human Resources
- Banking Supervision
- Statistics
The tasks you perform as a trainee will vary according to the unit you join.

Your role
Our traineeships offer you excellent opportunities to learn about the tasks and functioning of the ECB, contribute to the ECB’s mission, acquire hands-on experience in an area of your interest and put your theoretical knowledge into practice. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.
As a trainee at the ECB you will work with the members of the team to which you have been assigned and contribute to ongoing tasks as well as gaining an insight into the work and the functioning of the ECB. You will use English (either spoken or in writing) on a daily basis to communicate and carry out your assignments.
You will join one of the following teams and deal with the tasks corresponding to that team. During the application process we will ask you to tell us which areas you are interested in.
Human Resources
HR Systems and sick leave administration
- Supporting end users in their day-to-day activities and advising on HR rules and policies;
- Contributing to process automation, including preparing test data for several HR modules (e.g. SAP and Avature);
- Performing tests and regressions for HR processes (e.g. weekly sick leave reporting) and documenting test results;
- Preparing and updating training material.
HR Analytics and data science
- Developing HR-related statistical analyses, reports and data science solutions;
- Working on new tools and technologies, testing them and developing prototypes;
- Supporting the development of a data and evidence-based HR approach by reviewing research literature, generating insights from available reports and tools and training colleagues to integrate these tools into their work;
- Transforming and visualising HR information and datasets for various projects and tasks (including benchmarking and presentations).
Banking Supervision
Directorate General Universal and Diversified Institutions
- Working together with Joint Supervisory Teams to contribute to the safety and soundness of the European banking system and the overall financial system in the euro area;
- Contributing to monitoring credit institutions’ risks and risk management processes;
- Supporting the Joint Supervisory Teams in performing risk analysis-based surveillance and analytical research.
Directorate General On-Site and Internal Model Inspections (non-financial risks)
- Providing support in all activities related to climate risk supervision;
- Participating in on-site inspections, including business travel if desired;
- Providing ideas on carbon footprint optimisation for the Directorate General.
Directorate General Systemic and International Banks
- Supporting the daily work of the Operational Risk Team in IT Risk Assessment;
- Contributing to the maturity assessment of supervised banks’ IT processes, policies and procedures;
- Contributing to benchmarking analyses and sharing IT best practices;
- Supporting the IT Team Lead in organising meetings with supervised banks and horizontal functions across European banking supervision.
Statistics
- Working with economists and statisticians to check and validate monetary and financial data received from the national central banks;
- Contributing to a project to review the IT programmes and code used by the statistics directorate. This task may require substantially testing the new programming routines and comparing the results with those from the older programmes;
- Maintaining and developing tools for distributing and visualising statistics;
- Preparing and updating handbooks and tools used to document different statistical production processes.
You will be assigned an experienced colleague as a mentor to help you successfully participate in the programme.
Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential:
- a bachelor’s degree or higher in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, business administration, economics, business information systems, business analytics, finance or another relevant field;
- excellent analytical and conceptual skills and an interest in complex technical or economic content;
- proven experience in analysing, processing and visualising data and information;
- a good knowledge of the MS Office package;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
- experience in using enterprise IT systems;
- experience and advanced skills in programming languages or visual analytics platforms (e.g. Python or R, SQL or Tableau), big data technologies and/or the SAP Human Capital Management module;
- experience in the field of data science (e.g. statistical and econometric analysis, artificial intelligence or machine learning);
- experience in data preparation, dataset maintenance, as well as data transformation, cleaning or reporting;
- knowledge of banking, finance and risk management, or experience in accounting;
- understanding of IT processes, IT architecture principles, best practices and IT maturity assessment methodologies;
- good knowledge and strong interest in climate-related and environmental issues, carbon footprint and environmental, social and governance risks in general.
You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution.

Application and selection process
The recruitment process for this position will include a remote written exercise in the pre-selection phase and – if you are invited to participate in the subsequent selection phase – an online interview.
As this traineeship is restricted to candidates whose autism has been clinically diagnosed, shortlisted candidates must provide corresponding evidence by uploading a relevant medical certificate via the application tool. The certificate should be issued by a certified psychiatrist in one of the EU official languages within a week of receiving the invitation to participate in the selection process. Candidates who fail to provide medical evidence within the time limit or whose evidence does not meet the criteria will be rejected. (See further information on the medical certificate here).

If your application is successful, you will be offered an on-site visit to get to know the ECB premises, your team and your environment, currently planned for July. The traineeships are planned to start on 15 September 2022.
