Your team
You will be part of the Fiscal Policies Division in the Directorate General Economics. Our Division has 25 staff responsible for assessing the national fiscal policies of Member States of the European Union (EU) and the euro area’s fiscal stance, providing fiscal forecasts and debt sustainability analysis, and producing analytical work on a variety of related topics, including interaction between fiscal and monetary policy. The Division is also responsible for analysing issues related to the reform of the architecture of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), particularly as regards the EU’s fiscal framework.

Your role
As a trainee, you will:
- support research analysts and economists in our Division, contributing to both short-term tasks and longer-term projects;
- help to maintain and develop the Division’s databases in order to monitor fiscal developments and related macroeconomic and financial market indicators;
- contribute to the enhancement of the Division’s forecasting, modelling and other analytical tools;
- support the Division’s regular internal and external products, including its contributions to the ECB’s Economic Bulletin, for instance by preparing tables, charts, presentations and other analytical input in collaboration with other ECB business areas;
- conduct empirical analysis and macroeconomic modelling, contributing to the Division’s research projects.

Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential:
- a bachelor’s degree or higher in economics, finance, mathematics, statistics, data science, computer science, engineering or a related field;
- experience of using statistical, econometric and data science packages and programming languages (e.g. MATLAB, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) for Excel, EViews, Stata, R or Python);
- experience in processing and analysing fiscal, macroeconomic or financial market data;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
- a master’s degree or higher in economics, finance, mathematics, statistics, data science, computer science, engineering or a related field, or studies towards such a qualification with the prospect of graduation in the near future;
- strong programming skills in one or more of the following: MATLAB, VBA for Excel, EViews, Stata, R, Python, Julia or another language;
- experience of programming automated tasks and reports, together with knowledge of business intelligence and visualisation software (e.g. Tableau).

You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. All candidates should:
- be a national of a Member State of the EU or of an acceding country;
- be at least 18 years old;
- have completed at least a first cycle qualification (minimum bachelor’s degree);
- be fluent in English and in another official language of the EU.
Following their most recent qualification candidates should:
- have a maximum of 12 months’ professional experience;
- have been a trainee for no more than six months;
- not have been an ECB trainee or have worked for the ECB previously.
